Most of what we clean in Takapuna is compact: hard floors, a galley kitchen, one or two bathrooms and a balcony. Small doesn’t mean quick — the surfaces are all visible at once, so a missed streak on the splashback or a dusty skirting is the first thing anyone sees walking in.

The sea air is the other constant. Salt films over windows and glass balustrades within days, sand comes in on feet and settles into the carpet edges and the sliding door tracks, and balcony furniture needs wiping far more often than it would two suburbs inland.
